At AEGIR-Marine, we believe in the future, which naturally means we want to take care of the environment. Since our founding, we have been mindful of our carbon footprint in various ways (e.g., solar panels, heat pumps, electric vehicles), but we are convinced that we can do much better. And we also believe that we must do much better. We consume a significant amount of energy in the production of our products and travel the world to repair our customers' ships, which negatively impacts the environment.
In addition to caring for the environment, we also believe we must take care of our employees, customers, and suppliers. We are committed to being transparent, honest, and ethical, avoiding greenwashing, and striving to have a positive impact on our surroundings. It’s time for change, with full focus on Environmental (Planet), Social (People), and Governance (Profit) principles.


What are we going to do

We will assess our current impact (both positive and negative) and identify areas for improvement. The tool we are using for this is the B Corp certification process. B Corp companies are committed to creating a more sustainable and livable world, going beyond just corporate social responsibility. B Corp stands for Benefit Corporations—benefits for us, benefits for our surroundings.

While working on our Sustainability Plans, we will continue to grow as a company, which will result in an increasing CO2 footprint in scopes 1, 2, and 3. We acknowledge this and will, of course, take action to reverse this trend. However, we also want to ask the market for help. Creating the Tools to Stay Relevant in the Future 

Or what we call the Plimsoll Mark 2.0
To stay relevant as a ship, you must do at least one thing: avoid sinking. In the past, many ships sank because they were not properly loaded. To address this issue, a universal loading mark was created by the Englishman Samuel Plimsoll. In 1871, he introduced this mark for all sea-going vessels, and it became known as the Plimsoll Mark. The use of this mark has significantly reduced the number of vessels sinking due to improper loading.

For a company like AEGIR-Marine, it is equally important not to "sink" and to remain relevant in the future. This is why we have started the B Corp certification process, a method that will help us become more sustainable throughout our organisation.
To ensure the ESG pillars remain embedded in our actions and behaviours, we have decided to evaluate our key tools against these pillars. As a result of this evaluation, we have slightly adjusted our Mission, Vision, and Code of Conduct and incorporated them into our own Plimsoll Mark. Our DNA remains unchanged—it is strong and has brought us to where we are today. There's no need to update it; we just need to keep it alive.

On the top left side, you see our Mission and Vision, which are closely related to what the company does and what it aspires to be. On the bottom left side, you see our DNA and Code of Conduct—tools that support our employees in demonstrating to our customers, suppliers, and ourselves how we wish to collaborate.

On the top right side, you see Job Descriptions, which outline what AEGIR-Marine expects from its employees. On the bottom right side, you see our Appraisal and Reward systems, which show what employees can expect to receive in return.

During the evaluation process, we discovered that our tools are almost entirely aligned with what AEGIR-Marine strives to be and what B Corp expects from us. Only minor adjustments were needed to further express our commitment to doing our best for people and the environment.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility is a subject that we care about a lot. Every year, we donate part of our profits to charity. To this end, our CSR committee uses the criteria in the allocation of funds.

A project should:

  • involve young people.
  • have a start and an end.
  • be open to more involvement. We want to feel committed.
  • provide a better future.
  • the receiving partner has to join in and put effort into the project too.

Examples of projects we have worked on include building a school in Gambia, and repair and maintenance work on the hospital ship Africa Mercy.

The Maritime Remanufacturing Network

Improving the maritime industry
Even though the maritime industry has made significant progress on the subject of sustainability in recent years, there is definitely room for improvement. The maritime industry currently operates with an average ship age of +/-25 years. Although this is generally assumed to be a ship’s end of economic life, it is not necessarily the end of operational life for all the components inside a ship. Remanufacturing can increase the lifespan of ship components, providing substantial economic and environmental benefits.
