CO2 Measurements and the next steps on our Sustainability Journey
AEGIR-Marine recently submitted its B Corp application as part of our commitment to becoming more sustainable. Over the coming months, AEGIR-Marine will be assessed on all aspects of its business operations. Does this mean we’ll hold off on taking immediate action? Not at all. Take, for example, our approach to managing our carbon footprint
Since 2021, we’ve measured our CO₂ emissions annually. Below are the results from the past three years:
Note: These results cover our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions according to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, measured globally by an independent, specialised company.
While these figures are valuable, comparing them is challenging. No suitable benchmarks exist within the maritime service sector, and our industry is certainly not leading the way in this area. Although COVID-19, increased stock levels and a continuously growing business have impacted the increased growth of our emissions, this cannot be considered as an excuse. We must reverse this trend and reduce our emissions.
What is clear is that a significant portion of our CO₂ emissions comes from air travel, as well as the production and transportation of our seals and propulsion parts. Accepting this passively is not an option. While our ultimate ambition is to operate 100% emission-free, this is currently not realistic. For now, we are committed to taking the following actions:
1. Engage our suppliers
We will set goals and integrate them into our contracts, especially with our manufacturing partners.
2. Continue with internal improvement projects
In addition to previous initiatives like solar panels, alternative building heating and cooling, an emissions-free car policy, local AEGIR-Marine service stations, and reusable packaging, we will keep pursuing further improvements.
3. Budget for CO₂ Compensation in 2024
For 2024, we have reserved a budget to plant trees to offset our total Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions from 2022. In selecting projects, we will prioritise not only CO₂ compensation but also maximum impact on biodiversity, soil quality, water management, and surrounding communities.
4. Collaboration with Customers
We aim to work with our customers to explore ways to jointly reduce and offset our CO₂ footprint. We will reach out to our customers to share our ideas, gather insights, and develop plans together. If you would like to take the initiative yourself, please let us know.
Our goal is to establish a robust reduction and compensation programme together with our suppliers and customers, fully aligned with our sustainability ambitions.
